Wireless Repeater

Do I have to have a special type of router or repeater to turn an ordinary wireless router into a repeater for an existing network and are they more expensive?

Hello RainbowDustin;

The simple, quick answer is yes.

However, many of the current router models have the "Bridge" feature included, which allows you to bridge two or more routers in the same network to extend the range.

Please note that when creating a wireless "Repeater", you give up like half of your bandwidth because the router must first receive the signal, then rebroadcast the signal. As it cannot broadcast and receive simultaneously, half your time is spent in waiting. However, when bridging two routers with a cable, you do not experience this loss.
