Could you walk me through it? I have no idea how to do that AT ALL. My computer skills are terrible.

ok, how are you connecting to the internet. by that i mean what is your cable connected to? some cards require a crossover cable and some will connect happily with a standard cable.

One end of the cable is my motherboard, and the other end is plugged into the modem

when u connect the desktop pc to the modem is there any other computers connected? (sorry but i need to know as much info as i can to be able to help!)

Have you tried going to Device Manager, uninstalling the Ethernet Driver. Wait a few moments, and then at the top of the device manager tree, select scan for new devices? This will erase the driver and force a reinstall.

Another thing is: You can open the command prompt and try a few things:

1) Ipconig/release

Wait a few moments

2) Ipconfig / renew

You should also go to your Local Area Network adapter and check the properties and see if you have a static address configured. I think someone already mentioned that however.

Since you say your laptop is working, was your laptop perhaps connected by wireless at the same time that you had your Network Cable plugged in?

That is great advice and is probably all you need.

Just in case, you might try resetting your cable modem if you haven't done so already. I'd unplug it, wait two minutes, then plug it back in.

I reinstalled the driver and still doesnt work. And my laptops wifi is shutoff, still works.

I did everything with cmd and still doesn't work. Also, I reseted my modem, and that didn't do anything.
