In order to network, should I connect to Thompson or Linksys320N?

Been having trouble getting my laptop to network with my desktop, both have windows7 hp 64-bit, and both have Norton Security Suite (whose firewall is set to allow pass though). I ahve a Thompson modem (that is also a router), but the router part is shut off and I use a Linksys router 320N. I can get the computers to Homegroup network when going wireless, but when I hook the laptop into the Thompson (via ethernet), I wind up with two different networks: Desktop is Network5 and the Laptop is Network. What I'm thinking, but haven't tried becasue I don't know what I am doing, is to ethernet connect the laptop to the Linksys instead of the Thompson. Does this make sense?

First try this. Download and run Linksys Easylink Advisor. Then run trouble shooting.

Thanks. I'm away from home for a week and won't be able to try until then.

Finally figured out how to network between my desktop and laptop. Can't believe how simple it was. My modem/router set up is strange to begin with. Don't ask why it is this way, but here it is: Have a big Thomson modem (is is also a router, but I don't use this function) to which is connected a Linksys 320N. I had my laptop connected via ethernet to the Thomson and couldn't get networked tot he desktop witht his configuration. So all I did was to ethernet connect the laptop directly to the Linksys and there was a proper network connection that allowed me to quickly transfer stuff between computers.
