    Workgroup issue

    Hello everyone,

I am having a network issue.

    My computer name is Eolis

    Workgroup name= WORKGROUP (Default right?)

I decided to change the workgroup name to EOLIS (same as computer, is that bad?)

Now I see two of "EOLIS" under network and one belongs to the workgroup of WORKGROUP, and the other belongs to the workgroup EOLIS. Huh?

When you go to Advanced settings and change the workgroup name from the default (WORKGROUP) windows asks you to restart, which I did, thats when I noticed that now I see EOLIS twice under network. I don't need two, do I? I should only see my computer name, and the workgroup name I chose under network, right?

Can I delete the one I don't need? If so, how do you delete that? I can't find an option to do so. Also when I networked computers under XP I never had an issue with seeing two of the same name like I am now. Kinda funny.

Not sure why its doing this. Could this be a glitch in Win7 RC1 Build 7100
I hope I didn't confuse anyone. I'm trying to explain this as best I can. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    Hello Helpfulnerd,

These are two separate names used to ID your computer on a network. You cannot delete one of them, but you can change any one or both of them to be any name you like. These two tutorials below may help explain these in more details. They are the same in Windows 7.

    and

    Hope this helps,

    Shawn,

Thanks again, you always have helpful answers. I did however figure out that I made a goof and and named my Workgroup after my computer name. So it came up twice. I changed the workgroup name and know the computer name under network only shows once. As it should.

Got it working, and thanks for the tutorial links. I'll check those out.

    Take Care.
