    Ports

    1. My opinion is all ports should be closed as far as the internet is concerned. (Stealth Mode)

    2. Ports can be opened and closed via your firewall rules.

Sometimes you have to open a port for a particular reason. I have a couple opened for networking purposes. But I am behind a router and they still show up closed to the Internet.

No firewall + open ports = Disaster

I had to open a port In and out on two machines so they could recieve and send Wake on Lan signals.

i can't deny the fact & totally agree with u...thanx for the link,i tried & results were encouraging but had a little concern my comp's 135 & 445 ports were open & its a little trick to close them & risk as well, so, the dgc.com suggested that i close them by having a firewall in place & then i'll be safe & sound. so i took the advice & downloading the latest comodo firewall....thanks for the link it helped get let of information about each ports on comp & all existing ports as well.

You say you're not using any Firewall. Did you turn of the Firewall that comes with Win 7?

    Very, very true!

Do you then have zero anti-anything software installed?

Are you also running User Access Control wide-open (down at the bottom of the slider)? This is as also a disaster waiting to happen.

    @ Ztruker
No i'm not using the Windows Firewall because it allowed a virus & then i couldn't log in...so have to reinstall my OS
    @ karlsnooks
my UAC level is at the recommended level, i don't prefer putting that off completely yeah sometime 1 level down so my screen is not dim....but folks i'm just getting Comodo firewall 5.0 for my comp. that put back in place...ie safe zone...

    deepakumar,

I'll let you on a little tidbit of info.

The majority of us answering questions here--run, maybe once a month, maybe once a quarter, maybe only once but we run MalwareBytes.

Then we use for our virus/spyware/malware protection the best there is which is also free, namely, Microsoft Security Essentials.

Here's the draconian approach I use to clean up computer. This approach has never failed me.

    ________________________________________
ANTI-VIRUS - VIRUS and MALWARE REMOVAL / PROTECTION
    1. Download MalwareBytes. Malwarebytes Malwarebytes
    2. Disconnect from the Internet.
    3. Disable your present antivirus software and firewall.
    4. Remove your present antivirus software and firewall.
    5. Install and run the MalwareBytes Quick Scan (remove any bad guys). 3min 29secs on my laptop.
    6. Reconnect to Internet.
    7. Update MalwareBytes.
    8. Run malwarebytes quick scan again.(remove any bad guys). 3min 38secs on my laptop.
    9. Run MalwareBytes full scan. 16min 8secs on my laptop. With large, full disk ~2hours.
    A. Disable your present antivirus software and firewall
    B. Remove your present antivirus software
    C. Download Microsoft Security Essentials.
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
    D. Run Microsoft Security Essentials. Quick Scan - ~8 min on my laptop.
    E. Run Microsoft Security Essentials. Full Scan - ~ 1hr 50 min on my laptop.
Now I advise you to uninstall MalwareBytes and only install again when and if you need it.
Why?, you ask. Leaving MalwareBytes installed slowed my system. AutoRuns showed MalwareBytes processes running even after exiting from MalwareBytes.
