    Belkin Wireless G and WPA2

Hi, just built a computer, and didnt get a wireless card so I am using an old belkin wireless g usb adapter that we had lying around (it is revision 4 from the belkin site and FCC id). Anyway i got the Driver Installed in 32bit, struggled for hours in 64bit to no avail so i just reverted to 32. I see my wireless router, but it is unable to connect. It is hidden with WPA2 (not sure about encryption) but it just wont connect giving me the cryptic Windows was unable to connect to <ESSID>. Troubleshoot just tells me to turn of the router, which i have done but it doesnt work. Any suggestions?

Turning off your router wouldn't solve it, seeing as that is what is giving you the wireless capabilities. Did you ever make it so your router had to have the mac address of the computer to connect to the internet? Have you tried restoring your wireless router to factory defaults( make sure to remember how it was setup though)?

    Thanks for the quick reply.

It is not my router, so I can't do those. However, I know it isn't MAC address filtered and this USB Device has connected to it before as it was plugged into a rarely used Win98 machine that we can connect to.

Edit: I can connect on my win XP laptop.

Have you tried disabling Windows Firewall or any Firewall software you may have installed(anti-virus stuff)?

Is your laptop relatively new as in does your laptop wireless card support WPA2? Could you possibly post the actual product name of the wireless card?

what driver are you using? Thats the first issue. The second issue is that i had seen a few problems early on using WPA2. Atleast i thought this was an issue, as it seems to not d/c as much, but still had the underlying non-complete working driver as well.

If you have the f5d7050v4010setup.exe, Right click the exe and do 1 of two thing. 1.)Click Troubleshoot Compatibility. This will perk your ears, as it will recommend you install under XP SP2 mode. This will also install the belkin utility. No use of to you as you will find out that you cant save any settings using the utility itself. Take it out of startup, thru msconfig/startup.
2.) Run that setup.exe in Vista SP2 mode. Wont get the utility, and you should be able to have lan and internet ax. Although this driver isnt perfect, it will give you the best connection imo.

Tho if you are still on the 7100 RC, no matter what comp mode, that adapter will not report its status correctly. You will run into the orange asterix if you boot to desktop and you "connect auto" to your network. You will BE connected, it will just say you arent. You may even run into the Red X over the icon. 7127 may have not corrected the underlying driver/connection problem. But it did correct the network adapter to report correctly/accurately.

Word of advice, the win7 Belkin driver is no good, you will get lan ax, but no inet for some WIERD reason i've yet to figure out.

** always uninstall the previous driver before you go installing a new one fyi **

On 7100, this has to be done manually by going into C:\windows\system32\drivers. Deleting/uninstalling thru DM or any other means DOES NOT delete the driver, it only uninstalls the device. Keep a close eye on each drivers DATE. I believe the Vista SP2 driver date is 11/10/2007 or 10/11/2007.... the win7 stock driver date is i think 5/7/2007 or something real close to that.

Thanks for the help. I actually bought a new card off Newegg and I was going to try that before messing around with the belkin one again.

My laptop is a HP/Compaq nc8430 bought about 2 years ago (July 07).
