    D-link DI-524 & Edimax EW-7728ln

I got a Wireless 802.11n Edimax network card for my desktop PC, now it's a good desktop PC with excellent multitasking capabilities like playing 1080 buray rips on one of my dual monitors at the same time as supreme commander on the other, 2 very demanding tasks at once without any problems..

Oh, and it seems that if the reception signal goes down to like 2 bars my computer really slows up..

So you might understand my suprise when i Installed my new wifi card and my computer started stuttering, almost freezing and slowing down with weird loud sparkling crackling noises coming out of my speakers at times.

Frequent drops in connection to the router and or internet.

Whenever i start civ 5 my connection dies, it's like the computer can't handle both at once. it's like the whole cpu is dedicated to the wifi card... i checked the task managers performance monitor and didn't see anything strange.

I reset the router back to factory default and the WPA2 personal AES encryption was removed and now the computer seems perfectly fine at dealing with civ5 and internet at once...

so whats up? shitty wifi card and router? would a nice 120€ cisco router solve my problems? because now my wifi lan is unencrypted.

    i got windows 7 x64

It sometimes helps to set the router to use wireless N only not mixed and also WPA2 AES only, then use the manual wireless set up in Windows 7 to use the same settings, not mixed.

With a router this old it might be worth while to update the firmware but if there isn't any recent firmware updates from Dlink you can try either the tomato firmware or the ddwrt firmware.

If you go that route be sure and only use the firmware that is made for your specific routers model and version number. You can usually find them by googling around for them.

tomato firmware , i checked their website and they seem to only support linksys? didn't find any database to search if my router was compatible.

or the ddwrt firmware says my model doesn't have enough ram or something so they have nothing for it.

Would it simply be best if i went out and bought a new cisco router instead?

Yes that router is outdated and it's not supported by Dlink anymore, as in no recent firmware for Windows 7. Wireless G is limited on speed so going to N would help.

I did find a more recent firmware for the DI-524 version B4 only "check your version number on the router". It might work with Windows 7 but not sure and it's only for the B4 version of this router.

Going to a router with wireless N to work with your Edimax N wireless connection would be a big improvment over what you have now.

I also think it's important to point out that according to the Windows 7 compatiblity chart the DI-524 isn't compatible with Windows 7 although there may be firmware for certain versions that will work like in the link above.

uhm, what? firmware for windows 7? Isn't the firmware for the router and not the computer OS? I think I missed something, I never knew a desktop pc and os had to be compatible with a network router / switch / hub, I was always under the impression that if my computer had an Ethernet port and so did the network router then things would automatically be compatible. If i'm wrong with this please explain or guide me.

I was just listening to di.fm and answering e-mails in outlook 2010, and suddenly the music stopped and winamp got stuck at buffering 0% and all of a sudden my mouse cursor got really SLOW MOTION kind-of slow... i took a look in the systray and the reception was at like 1-2 bars for the wifi.

a minute or so later the wifi started working alright again and the mouse cursor got back to normal speed....

WHAT on earth does these things have in common and how could things get like this by installing a wifi card?

Also, on occasion i get really loud nasty "spark" kind of sounds comming out of my speakers... is this something with the system being super strained? the funny thing is i can't see anything in the task manager about heavy cpu loads.

I stuck the wifi card in another pci slot now... made no difference

took the card out and booted, everything worked perfecly fine.

WHAT the hell does using this network card got to do with my system getting all sluggish? my mouse cursor movement even feels uneven.

Anyone got any experiences with edimax? are they crap? should i go out and shell out another 50€ on a second card in hopes of things getting better?

i'm so fu** pissed right now I have a headache...

Updated firmware as in updated on behalf of Windows 7, in other words firmware that is made to work with Windows 7. I thought this might be fairly obvious but I guess not.

In fact the firmware link that I posted just worked to fix another messed up DI-524 revision B4. If you let me know which revision you are using I may be able to find an updated firmware that will work better for you.
"Local Area x" does not have a valid IP config

As for the edimax EW 7728In, apparently there are quite a few having problems with that adaptor. It seems to be a driver problem and the complaints I see are that there are no decent Windows 7 drivers for that adaptor. Ralink should have them but most complain that those drivers aren't working right.

Here is a standard complaint about that PCI adaptor.
Edimax EW-7728In 802.11n PCI WiFi Card (Electronics) Card is ok when it isn't crashing my computer.. under Windows 7 64-bit it randomly freezes my system and even bluescreens it sometimes. Tried edimax original & latest drivers, windows updates own driver, ralink latest chipset driver.. all do the same shame.

Ok third one down should be the one you want for your 64 bit system.
