    linksys wrt54g problems

I have a win7 pc that has been using a linksys wrt54g router to an ISP cable modem. Has worked for about a year with no problems. Suddenly, my wifi has died. I cant connect through the linksys and I cant see wifi using my iphone.

I tried to connect to the router on ports 1-4 using the ip address 192.168.1.1 but all I get is "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

So, do we think think the router has died? I tried to power it off and on and did the reset for 30 sec but still no help.

I also tried to connect straight to the router using my XP laptop but nothing...

    Any ideas?

I have the exact same router. I'm running 3 systems with Seven, one with XP, one with Vista, 3 iPod touch devices a Nintendo Wii and 2 networked printers. Zero problems. Most are on the WiFi, only my file server is direct-connect.

Sounds a little like the router has just crashed. Doesn't happen very often but it does happen. Try a hard-reset using the recessed reset button on the back. If, after that, you can't even connect to it with a cable directly then yeah ... yer probably looking at a dead unit.

Go to Lynksys.com, download and install the latest firmware.

That's probably a good idea but if he can't connect with it to start with it won't help.

^^ The router is very, very, easy to bypass.

You can try plugging directly into the modem to get around the router problem. The router probably just needs a reset, sometimes you need to hold the reset button down then unplug the router, still holding the button down then plug it back in again and hold the button down for another thirty seconds.

There are many different firmware's to choose from for that router, tomato firmware, DDwrt firmeware, plus the Linkksys firmware. Just be sure and use the firmware that is made for the exact version number because there are about a dozen different versions of that router.
