i noticed your subnet mask setting is different for each machine, but its probably not that simple. every machine i've used, the setting is 255.255.255.0

Yes kword the default gateway, IP and subnet are all messed up. Dwarf already posted the correct subnet for the static ip but to no avail.

Those Thompson modem-routers are suspect and finding updated firmware can be a real chore.

I don't know much about them because they don't sell them here in the US but I have seen many complaints about them not working right with Windows 7.

Damn, I was hoping not to hear that about the router, I moved here recently from Canada and have never heard of them either.

Preconfigured routers are completely new to me.

The fact that this machine already worked at your brothers house and probably with a different router tends to point to a router or modem problem. But I'm really not familor with the settings on that router so it's hard to say for sure. Seemed like most of the reported problems were with 64 bit Op systems.

Unfortunately, my Icelandic is non-existant. However, we have another member who is Icelandic, so I've asked him for assistance.

In the meantime, what I am after, and the reason why I asked for the name of your ISP, is to get the relevant information for configuring a router in order to be able to work with the ISP. Given that your system connects without problems at your brother's and that your router works with your laptop leads me to think that your current router isn't, for some reason, compatible with your system.

Thanks Dwarf! If you need me to get some info from my ISP let me know, I can get the ball rolling with them.

Can you enter your router configuration? This, from my router's configuration page, shows the information required (outlined in red).
