I've had D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear routers. Of these, Netgear have been the least reliable for me. Linksys has been very reliable but their software leaves a bit to be desired for my taste. D-Link has been very reliable for me and also has easy software to configure router settings. I would recommend a D-Link router to anyone.

Our Linksys B-G router lasted 10 years then started needing reset monthly.

I found a Linksys WRT100 draft-N at Fry's on clearance for $30. It needs resetting occasionally but is holding up nicely for two years now by itself on a busy home network.

I've been asking for two years: are Draft-N routers the same as beta, and what should I expect? No one seems to know.

I have a Linksys in one location and a Netgear with integrated modem in another location. Both work well and have never failed me (since several years).
I currently have a Netgear but I have to agree with whs, also a N router would add a little to whichever one your using I think. Fabe

I personally use and love Mikrotik routers. The flexibility is beyond comparison to it's competitors, not to mention the hardware selection... You need a router with N radio? Plug a wireless N card to the router board. You need Gigabit switch? Plug a gigabit switch daughter card. As for software wise, Mikrotik's features are comparable to $1000++ IOS based Cisco routers. Even the base model have 5 independent interface you can configure all you want (for around $40, it's dirt cheap).

Btw, head to Routerboard.com for more info. Compared to D-Link/Linksys/Netgear/etc, Mikrotik looks like a "heavy 18 wheeler" compared to a "80's sedan"... Hardware wise, it can run on almost anything. The Mikrotik OS (the software) is developed independently to the hardware. This router is commonly used in my country to run a tiny ISP's backbone (several hundred users at a time). Yes, it is THAT reliable.

I'll take my 80's sedan anyday in that case, actually mid 60's muscle car is more my style LOL.

Yeah, each have their own "style"... I'd go with the 18 wheeler's bulletproof reliability, and not to mention it's very fast compared to el cheapo routers in it's class with more RAM than any other routers out there...

Still, it's one's preference, mine is Mikrotik...

There are so many variables and differences across brands/models. So is the question the best router or the best router manufacturer (as the poll suggests)?

Sounds like the mirotek is modular and can be upgraded by changing out the moduals. I do see a use for that traffic shaper, sounds kinda cool.

As far as LAN speed goes I can move a 4.35GB movie file to another machine in under 2 minutes. Course my router isn't exactly el cheapo at 90 bucks but seems reliable anyway.

Greg,

Just noticed your question.

In a way the Draft "n" could be considered as beta products as they were released before the "n" standard was ratified - However as there were no changes to the draft spec to the one finally ratified,I would consider it as an RC build that has now gone RTM
