help me with setting up VPN to home network from anywhere

I would like to set up a VPN Connection(more secure) to control my home PC from my laptop.

PC@home: Win 7 ultimate 64 bit
My laptop: Win Vista Business 32 bit
Router: Cisco-Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router
ISP: DSL

Ip@home I get from Whatismyipaddress.com: 69-XXX-XXX-XXX
Hostname I get from Whatismyipaddress.com:
adsl-69-XXX-XXX-XXX.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net


I do not have a pubilc static IP address, but my home PC is running at 24/7 with a static IP 192.168.1.X.

I read the Tutorial » "Remote Desktop Connection (RDC)" in this forum and I went through all the steps.
However, it didn't work. I am not sure what's wrong.



I also tried OpenVPN.
OpenVPN Server need to be installed on my home PC and OpenVPN client need to be installed in my laptop.
However, for the Acesss Server Software, I didn't find the version for Windows.
then, I went through some of the steps here HOWTO
It kind of complicated to follow.

Have you tried using Team Viewer yet? It's what most of use around here to access other machines remotely although it is different than VPN. I also posted the Windows 7 VPN network tutorial.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) - Enable Incoming VPN Connections

I tired the windows build-in VPN, It didn;t work. I configured the firewall and router in my home network as well as the firewall setting for my laptop. In the outgoing IP address filed, I put the router the IP address(which is the public IP); however, there are many PCs behind the router, so how could the VPN find the right one. I tried put COMPUTER_NAME\User_name as the User, but it didn't work either.

I didn't have the change to try TeamViwer today in the office. I will try it tomorrow.

When you configure our router, you add in the specific ports. When you have those ports opened and forwarded to your internal machine and any connection come to that port it is forwarded to the correct machine.

Is this what you are talking about:

start X to end Y, is that the range of the port and application is for the Name?
I know that some ports are reserved. is there a range of ports are clear?
