Windows 7: Network Discovery won't stay ticked

That is exactly the situation. Sorry for the mis-communication

I have all the relevant folders configured to share with full permissions and until recently, all were visible. The laptop won't get past the "contact" with the PC.

One other bit that I forgot (sorry) is that there is also an XP machine on the network that can access files on the PC. Only the laptop seems to have the issue.

(Glad to send some fun your way )

After making sure the permissions are set correctly with "Everyone" added to the permission list with full permissions, try rebooting all machines a couple times and see if anything changes.

Other than that, ANY type of A/V software or third party firewalls will cause these sorts of problem to occur.

All of the permissions are are set for "Everybody" and a couple of reboots made no difference.

Can you post the ipconfig /all from the laptop and then another from your Windows 7 machine?

From the looks of the laptop ipconfig, there seems to be a problem there. It is also a Win7 machine (Home Premium)

Wow, ok I think we have a winner. I havnt seen this exact problem but I've delt with similar problems many times. The second one is normal and is how you want your laptop to be.

Can you go into your device manager then at the top of the page choose the "View" tab then select "show hidden devices" and let me know if a bunch of strange entries are under your "network adaptor" section for this wireless adaptor.

There may be a bunch of 6 to4 adaptors in there, you will need to delate them all and reboot.

This is usually considered to be a driver problem of some sort.

Oh yeah... They're off the map! Most of them are Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #(from 1 to about 3 zillion)

Ok that is a typical problem, happened just last week in fact and another one today.

Delate every last one of those 6 to 4 adaptors and then reboot, windows will make a new one for you. After that see if you can connect again and post another ipconfig /all.

The only fix for this problem seems to be using another more recent driver so you may need to look around for one or delate the one you have installed now from device manager and let Windows 7 install one for you.

Yes it's a real pain when there are that many. Your connection may work again after you get rid of them all but if you don't want the problem to come back then a different network driver will be needed.

Someone with an i7 rig had this exact problem just the other day, easily fixed by using a newer driver.

I think the Asus support site had a newer one.
