Lost NAS drive from W 7

Hi:

I recently lost the connection to one of my NAS drives (a Simple Tech Simpleshare). I've tried to remap it using both the static IP and the \\simpleshare\netfolder route. Strangely, the latter connects me to (only) one of the folders in the share, but not the rest. In addition, there are no files visible until I go down to the last folder, when the files there show. However, I've found no way to map the share or even the drive itself with the several shares.

This happened once before and I can't remember what I did, if anything to restore it. I have been able to map & remap another NAS (My World Book) drive with no problem at all by using the IP address and the name of the share (\\192.168.10.73\downloads).

When I tried to do a System Restore, I found that it was turned off. There were also some glitches there. I've never used it before, so don't know if it was ever on -- just assumed that was the default with Windows 7 Pro (x64). Also, I was able to successfully map the drive to my xp machine on the network. Only the simpleshare will not connect from Windows 7.

The NAS drives also show fine on the other network computers. I've read other threads here on similar problems, but in those, the folders are visible and/or other differences.

This may have started after my area Internet went out. While trying to diagnose whether it was the modem or the router, I hooked the modem cable directly to the machine for a LAN connection and, working with the ISPs Tech (thinking the problem was the modem) assigned an IP address since it wasn't getting one. I restored to obtain address automatically and the wireless connected to the internet fine. I then restored the MyWoldBook NAS. But have the above problem with the other. I also checked the router Rules and copied the same rules for this machine to the simpleshare drive that work on the other drives. (actually they already existed, I just edited and saved again to make sure they were renewed).

Any ideas or suggestions to narrow down the problem would be appreciated!

Thanks,

George

System restore is on by default so I'm not sure why it wasn't turned on.

Have you tried going into the Security tab of the drive and allowing for permissions there?

Chev65: Ha! That was it. I have no idea how the security permissions changed, nor why system restore was off -- that's something I never would have turned off. The Simpleshare NAS has it's own setup page, so once I got into that and fiddled with permissions, I was able to map it with Windows 7 again. Strange but at least I'm connected again.

Thanks,

George

Sounds good George, those darn Security permissions cause problems with drive shares all the time, it's a good security feature though but an extra step is required to share a drive.

The system restore being off by default is something I've seen before so I'm not too surprized about that. I'll mark this as solved.
