ICS - Windows 7 and Windows XP

i have 2 computers with one as Win 7 and a old PC as Win XP. The Windows 7 PC is the host computer with a USB internet modem (motorola sbv 5121) emulated as a network adapter. The windows 7 PC is also connected to the Win XP PC via onboard network port.

In the past, when the host pc was windows xp, ICS and network filesharing worked perfectly. I had the both computers set static IPs on the local network and everything worked.

Now, after upgrading the host to Windows 7 the ICS isn't working anymore. The USB Modem supports ICS, i used it under windows XP.

Current configuration:

ICS is enabled on USB network adapter.
Both computers set to dynamic IP on local network. Windows 7 PC assigns itself to 192.168.137.1. Windows XP PC was given 192.168.137.34, default gateway 192.168.137.1.
Both PCs set to WORKGROUP. I turned on network discovery file sharing blah blah blah on both home/public settings since the local network is seen by Windows 7 PC as "Public" and its greyed out so i cannot change it to "home".

Filesharing is working on both PCs. The "Connected to internet gateway" icon appears on Windows XP PC under Network Connections. BUT it still cannot connect to the internet.

Any ideas?

go to control panel/network and internet/network and sharing center. in the left hand column, click "change adapter settings". right-click the adapter you want to share and click roperties". click the "sharing" tab. put a check in the box next to "allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection".

I have ticked "allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection" but the other computer still cannot access the internet... That's the problem in the first place.

Here's a checklist of things for ICS and file sharing for 2 croslinked computers (in my case a Windows 7 and XP one):

- both computers set to the same workgroup
- restarts
- advanced sharing settings - all things turned on (network discovery etc.) except for password protected sharing
- bridged the connection with the internet
- turned on Internet Connection Sharing for the internet connection - this forced an ip to the other connection (192.168.137.1) and gave an option to select which connection should have access to the ICS (the second connection or the bridge - you choose the second / crosslinked cable connection)
- shared some folders on both computers
- worked instantly (the other pc aquired a correct ip and internet)

here is a couple more things to check:

Change Internet settings for ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)

Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)

here is an older thread that was marked solved for the same issue (i think somebody quoted part of it?):

My understanding of this is that i should highlight both the internet connection and local lan connection and select bridge connections?

edit: Omg it finally worked. i bridged both the connections together, then took the internet connection out of bridge while the local LAN remains bridged. I then disable and reenabled ICS and it finally, for some reason, worked. Lets hope it stays that way. Why did Microsoft make networking harder in windows 7? i got this working under XP in 5 mins.

I dunno why it's different to set up but bridging the connection has been working for people so thats why I posted the procedure. Glad it worked for you.

Thank you. Apparently, after rebooting the host computer the network settings reset itself and the network is borked again. *sign*. I think i should just bite the bullet and buy myself a router.
