If your router is having problems with Windows 7 then the router needs a firmware update. :)

You will need to go into your routers control panel by typing the default gateway into the URL of your browser. I'm not sure what router you have so giving exact direction isn't possible without more info about your router, I would need the make brand and model or version number.

You just need to look around in your routers settings and find the update firmware page, you might also need to track down the latest firmware for your router by going to the manufacture's website. Once you have the firmware you can update it from the firmware page. It's pretty easy once you are there.

There isn't a date for the latest firmware but it might be worth a try "link below". The default gateway for netgear should be 192.168.1.1

Thanks matey but after very careful testing ( smashing the modem and the router and borrowing another modem and buying a new router ) i found my problem was a broken onboard lan . pci lan card and all fixed

LOL, not exactly what I had in mind, the firmware update only takes a minute in most cases, sorry if that was confusing you. If that didn't work my next step would have been to take a close look at the network adaptor. Anyway I'm glad you got it all working.
