windows 7 won't ask me for user&pass but just deny access over LAN!

I've got a folder shared to specific user on my Windows 7 laptop.
When i try to access that folder over lan, from my Vista laptop, it doesn't ask me for user&pass, but just gives "Access denied" error message.

If it's set as shared to everyone, then i can access it just fine. But i want it to be accessible only after password protection over lan.


Both laptops are set to "WORKGROUP" and here are the network settings for the windows 7 one
Network Discovery: ON
File and printer sharing: ON
Public Folder Sharing: OFF
File sharing connections: Enable 40 and 56 bit encryption as well
Password protection sharing: ON
HomeGroup connections: Use user accounts and passwrods to connect to other computers

You have contradictory information

You say "workgroup" then homegroup connections--cant be both.

You say shared to a specific user then "shared to everyone"--again cant be both.

I would try disabling the encryption and see if the same problem exists.

I would also boot into safe more to see if it does it there as well

- I've set it as workgroup, but the default text in the settings is homegroup, that's just the description of the field.

- I said that i can access it when it's shared to everyone, but that's NOT what i want (please actually read my post)

The problem here is that you can't just add a User name to the "shared with" list. It does'nt work like that "and believe me I wish it did". I havn't had to mess with these settings myself so do not know the exact step by step process for this although the tutorial in the link below shows you how.

In order to share with an individual user you need to create a seperate User group on your machine then share with the intended "special User" through that User group.

It's best to make this a standard "non Admin" User account. In other words the only way to safely share files with an individual user is to share only through this special account effectivly creating a barrier between the special share account and the other Users.

Chev nailed it: Prompt for un/pw works if your account is not an admin... why would it prompt an "admin" for un/pw?

i made a non-admin account, and it's still the same
doesn't let me open the IP at all, it gives the following error message:
"\\IP is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.
"
and if i've set public folders to be on, i can view the shared folders, but when attempt to access the one i need, it says access denied, you are not logged in with the user granted access.
And i haven't had the chance to log-in.

I tried with username different and the same as well on the 7, no luck always. All of them were standard accounts.

Any ideas, i'm so lost?
