Corrupted Internet Connection files?

A few days ago, I began to have some issues connecting various applications to the internet. I've just now decided to ask for help but am somewhat pessimistic about my ability to be helped.

All of the sudden, the majority of my internet-based applications did not work. Internet explorer did not connect, nor did Chrome. My VATSIM server monitor application could not find servers, nor could my mail client, Thunderbird, or Windows Live Messenger 2011. Finally, I was able to get Firefox to work by disabling proxy connections in the settings. The only web-based App to work nonstop was AIM.

I started my troubleshooting with MSN Messenger 2011. When I looked up my error message (800488eb), one of Microsoft's explanations was this:
Files that are required to make a successful Internet connection are corrupted.

This hit me as a very possible scenario due to the strange assortment of problems I'm having.

Microsoft provided the following troubleshooting technique:

7. Reregister SSL security libraries. To do this, click "Start," click "Run," and type in each command below and hit ENTER.

Note: After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before you continue to the next command.

a. REGSVR32 softpub.dll
b. REGSVR32 wintrust.dll
c. REGSVR32 initpki.dll
d. REGSVR32 Rsaenh.dll
e. REGSVR32 Mssip32.dll
f. REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll
g. REGSVR32 Dssenh.dll
h. REGSVR32 Gpkcsp.dll
i. REGSVR32 Slbcsp.dll
j. REGSVR32 Sccbase.dll

I went down the list. Some worked, some my computer couldn't even find. The problem persisted. This is where I find myself. Does anyone have any solutions?

When it appears you are connected but your browsers won't go online it usually has to with either winsock or the TCP/ip stack has been corrupted.

Try running this batch file which will reset winsock, reset the TCP/IP stack and release renew your IP.

Hi Chev,

Unfortunately, when I run that batch file, it tells me that my media is disconnected and therefore no operation can be performed on it.

Have you tried doing a repair install from the Windows CD? That will usually fix your system when things get messed up.
