Can't telnet to 127.0.0.1

Don't ask me why, but I want to telnet my own computer. I've tried enabling all telnet services and adding ports, but I'm getting nowhere. Any hints?

Ever heard that 127.0.0.1 is also called localhost?

Because every access is automatically looped back to your machine that's why you can't really usefully telnet or ftp to 127.0.0.1

Trust me SledgeDG, there are newbs, and then there's me. I don't mind being told the utter futility of my actions, because believe me, I need all the help I can get! I just got so disgruntled not being able to telnet even to MUD's that I thought I'd try it on my computer. No harm in trying

I'm really sorry if I misunderstood your post.
I just had the impression of someone trying to pull legs.
What exactly are you trying to do (there is a reason why telnet is disabled by default)

Heh heh, no problem. I'm pretty much hopeless at telnet. A lot of people say it's antiquated and useless, but I just wanted to try my hand at it at least once. I read a couple of posts on some forums that it is possible to successfully telnet your computer using 127.0.0.1 (localhost -thanks for that!)

Maybe it's not do-able on 7. Maybe it's a load of bull-plop. I guess I could try to telnet my netbook from my pc whilst it's got a connection. I just wanted to do something that pretty much everyone else can do.

I used to use telnet at work some 15 years ago...
to remote log in from one UNIX machine through an ISDN phone-line into an SCO server on the other side of the country...It was almost like remote administration (re directing print jobs that were stuck in the spooler queue, checking backup logs etc.) So it sure had its use in the days.
Try it with your netbook (make sure to use a port that is not blocked by your AV

Well in the telnet server setup, have you bound the telnet server to 127.0.0.1? (If it's possible). For FTP you have to explicitly bind the server to every address you want to be able to FTP too, I havent set up telnet myself but it may be the same.

Also, can you telnet to your ACTUAL ip address? Say 192.168.0.45? (or whatever it is)
