New laptop - Wireless hits and misses

we have 2 new HP laptops and one won't stay connected to the wireless network.

My dad is a cable guy and we have the laptop working through an ethernet wire. If we unhook the cable sometimes the internet stays connected and sometimes it stops working. We even connected it to our network to share files. It's just the wireless that comes and goes.

Could you please give us the specs of the computer equipment involved ?

Make & Model #'s That will really help identify what needs to be looked at.

Are they in the same place? Does the connection only drop out at certain locations?
Any other wireless devices (phone for example) in between the laptop and the access point?

Yes the 2 new laptops are in the same room together as well as with the router. One laptop has no internet issues while the other one does.

Connection has hit and miss 20 minutes after connecting to up to 40+ minutes. It runs with the ethernet plugged in fine. The internet just shuts off and says "unable to connect."

No, no other wireless devices near by.

rockergal, open your network connection properties (where you set IP address), in that window, set it to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
I did this and it was already checked in case that matters

Turn Windows 7 Laptop into Wireless Repeater with One Wireless Adapter
Nowadays, wireless router is a basic device at home because wireless access point (AP) is required. Sometime, a wireless repeater is also needed in a big house especially that with a big yard. Importing csv file into Live Mail misses over half of contacts
I am trying to replicate my Comcast email service that I use on a desktop to a laptop. It runs in Windows Live Mail. I do not have a Windows Essential account nor do I want one. I have downloaded WLM and installed in the laptop. Comcast runs fine but of course I am missing my contacts. I have...

Search function totally misses some file names
I often search a folder with several layers of subfolders (and then sort by update date) to keep track of versions of things. Just searching a folder and 2-4 layers of subfolders. Just searching by file name, or part of a file name. And Windows 7 routinely MISSES files! This is something that has...
