Can't connect my WinXP PC to win 7 using cross over cable. :(

Hi,
I was trying to connect my old XP PC with my new Notebook using cross over cable. I configured IP addresses manually in both systems. Pinging can be done successfully from both the systems. but i cant share any files. Unidentified network is showing up in Win7.. please help

10 meters long for cross cable ?
I wanted to do a p2p connection to my sister pc in the other room which is around 10m just using the cross cable without using hub ... Is this length gonna cause a lot of problem because I heard that if it's longer than 5m then the packet loss will be a lot ... Anyone ?
