Network connection

I have a netbook Acer Aspire one 1532h with Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

When I do connect the netbook to the Microsoft Network most of the computers are running with Windows XP.

My netbook can not see other computers on the network unless I specific type the IP number of the computer.

I think that there is a compatibility problem of Windows 7 to read the names or the name server from Windows XP but I do not know how to solve the issue.

Does anyone on the forum knows how to solve this issue ?

Thank you very much in advance,

Regards,

Normando

Hi Normando and welcome to SF

I think it is one of two things.

Frist I suspect you are running "homegroup" which uses IPv6 on a mixed OS network. IPv6 sometimes has connectivity/sharing issues on mixed networks.

You can verify if this is the problem by creating a new network connection using "workgroup" which uses IPv4.

If it works you can disable IPv6 and kill the homegroup connection.

The second thing it can be is DNS/DHCP. Since you can see/find the computers using static IP and their IP address it may be this.

can you type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>ipconfig /all. Upload a screenshot of the output for us to examine.

You can also try ipconfig /flushdns, and then ipconfig /renew. If that temp resolves the issue it is DNS.

It can help to turn off simple file sharing on the XP machines.
How to use the Simple File Sharing feature to share files in Windows XP

As for getting your XP machines to show up on the network map of the Windows 7 machine, the tutorial below is helpful for that.

It's important to note that which ever A/V software you have installed can also cause problems with sharing.
