not to sound like a smarta*s but the OP could do a reinstall of the OS.. that would get rid of the main problem and all of the unnecessary bloatware installed.. the pc would run faster as well.. unless it is an OEM, that is what i would do..

*trying my best not to be a smarta*s and exits quietly*
Please don't give such ridiculous advice to newbies with a brand new computer. It is most unlikely that they would be capable of following it, but some might try, and cause themselves no end of headaches as a result. Especially on branded machines like HP and others, new installations can be very difficult, as proprietary drivers and all sorts of other stuff may be required.

OK. Then go to control panel once again, "Programs and Features" and uninstall the Symantec software.

Can you give me some more information on your Modem/router? I need to check something.

I just removed Symantec and it's asking me to restart. Should I do that now or wait?

Where can I find info on my modem or router, other than the bottom of the unit?

It is an Ubee modem, Model no. U10CO18.80.

    Yes Pls do that immediately.

    EDIT: Mike was fast.
Also, type msconfig in run box (hit Windows key+R) and uncheck every HP related item in startup tab. Apply and restart (it'll probably ask itself to do so).
And as others said, get rid of the bloatware. Use this tool- Welcome | The PC Decrapifier
Create a restore point first though in case if you need to revert back.
Try running 'ipconfig /flushdns' in an elevated command prompt (without the quotes).
Just my 2 cents. You're already being handled by experts.

DocB- eMachine was Windows 7. Dell was XP. For eMachine I also had no Internet for a few days, trying to figure out problems. Had to finally go and get new modem because modem I had did not support Windows 7, and so they gave me this one...
