unable to contact your DHCP server

I just replaced my XP desktop with a W7 laptop. I have had constant network issues. I have a home network with a Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT. My old XP computer worked fine as do another laptop running XP and three other networked devices: Tivo (wireless), WD TV Live Hub (wireless), WD NAS (wired). The W7 laptop takes a long time to connect, first as a "Public Network" without internet capability. Then about one minute later (sometimes longer) as a "Home Network" without internet. Then about one minute later (sometimes never) with internet. After a few hours usage, the connection goes away, becoming a "Public Network". I cannot even access the router configuration page. The only way to get connected again is to physically unplug my router. My router is set up for DHCP and all devices, including the new W7 laptop, are configured to automatically obtain IP addresses from the router's DHCP server. I noticed that my IP address, in ipconfig /all, is "192.168.1.130(Preferred)." I haven't seen a good explanation yet for the "(Preferred)" part of it. When I try to renew the IP address, the error message is "unable to contact your DHCP server." In the router settings, I have tried to assign a "static lease", something I did with my XP desktop, but the IP address never takes. I have run a Microsoft fix for TCP/IP stack. I have uninstalled and re-installed my wireless adapter. The adapter drivers are up-to-date. When I tried connecting the computer to the router via ethernet, I get no connection at all. This probably seems dumb but it appears that the DHCP connection is not working but the adapter is somehow connecting anyway but with limited/temporary abilities. Any help is greatly appreciated.

User error. I had my firewall set up incorrectly. I think the problem is solved.
