Wireless connection keeps timing out

Having a hard time here. All I wanted to do was update the software on my iPad to 4.2.. naturally I didn't buy the Apple protection plan on that..so NO tech support.. Well anyway.. after trying to run iTunes to update this gadget it gets into updating for an hour and a half and 'times out'.. trying to figure out this problem on my own.. is rather tough since I am very uncomputerized.. anyway I THINK I have managed to UNinstall all of the Apple stuff on my 64 bit OS system.. and so then I came across something saying to install Quicktime first..welllllll that times out a LOT faster trying to install than the update for the iPad.. I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of days and well it's becoming extremely annoying. I just found something that possibly I need but figured since I registered here today I'd run it by you all and see if there is something that I need to install that tells my ISP not to stop the what seems like inactive connection so that I can perform all these magic tricks and get both my ipad and iphone working like they're supposed to. Wirelessly.. thanks for any help.

Could you click my sig and follow the jgriff instructions?
A look at your error logs would probably provide a lot more insight than anything you could just tell us.

If not, Primary culprits would be av/firewall and router.

Sorry, too ignorant here to figure out the instructions!
Have turned off the firewall while trying to download..hmmn, cept on the quicktime download by itself.. well trying to reinstall the iTunes again..with the quicktime. Sometimes I do click on a website and find that there isn't a connection.. check to see why and there never is an answer.. reclick and it'll connect..just as suddenly..hmmn.. It'a netgear router I believe.. Maybe a direct connection via ethernet cable might help? thanks.

Have to allow the youngest child some access to the net. One pc house, however the router is getting a workout with new pc, printer, x box, iPad, and 3 iPhones. My son was complaining the other day about my using the Internet with the iPad causing his death on modern warfare...it was 'live' and he was being killed because the iPad was causing his game to lag. I did steal the mouse away from the 'kid' long enough to see some message waiting on networking in the far right corner of the screen so perhaps the issue could resolved by some troubleshooting there. That little gal using the computer at the moment could make the gals on Jersey Shore look like lightweight Italian gals so best to pick up on the computer at a later time. I'm replying via iPhone at the moment. Thank you for your help! J.
