    DHCP Service Needed?

    Hi all:

    I have DHCP disabled in the Router.
    I have a static IP address configured on my computer.

    Do I need the DHCP Service running?

    You may or may not read here. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Depending on your use and configuration you may be able to do without but why would you want to?

    DHCP is not required as long as you have all the relevant information entered in your network configuration.

    Some people choose to disable DHCP on their wireless networks as an additional safeguard against unauthorized use.

    I think in this case, the user is trying to increase performance on his local PC, but disabling a possibly unneeded service (DHCP Service). He did state that DHCP is disabled on his router (so this covers the security concern of unknown boxes gaining and IP to your network).

    I'm not sure you would gain much, if anything, measurable from turning off the DHCP Service on the local machine.

    @zigzag3143:
    Just to get rid of one more piece of unneeded junk...

    It doesn't matter if I see a difference in my computer's performance.
    What matters is that I know it has one less thing to do.
    That makes me happy.
    I'm a bit anal-retentive, I guess...

    .

    At least you aren't in denial. At the end of the day, if it makes you happy, by all means go for it. For me, if there is no difference in performance, I don't bother making changes. But that's just me.
