sharing with specific users/computers in the network

technically, having a user account called "Alex" on both computers is not going to work like you think it should.
The Alex account on Pc1 actually looks like: "Pc1\Alex" ... thus creating an "Alex" account on Pc2 = "Pc2\Alex" Each account is authenticated as a different "S-I-D" secure ID.


Generally in a workgroup you won't be able to change the "Location" of the user account you're attempting to give access to... example: Location being PC1: won't allow you to give access to "Pc2\Alex".
To gain access from 1 machine to the other, you can simply add the "Everyone" group into the security properties to give access to anyone on the network.

Just out of curiosity... Do you want to continue to have the home group on or do you want it off because that function shares every file with everyone that is on the home group.

But what if I just want to share it with that specific computer and not the whole network or homegroup?

I want to continue to have the homegroup on.

In workgroup, generally you won't have access to the other machine locations when specifying access to other computers... You'll need to create a local account on the host machine and configure the other computer to login with the hosted local computer as it's domain in the login.

Your login will look like this:
Username: HostPCname\Local user account name
Password will be set to whatever you want.

You'll need to add the Host computer's name before the user name to determine it's location and account attributes.

PCNAME\USERNAME - is very important.

so in my case, assuming my desktop was named "pc-desktop" and my laptop "pc-laptop", i'd have to create on the desktop the user "pc-laptop/alex" , i order to share something on my desktop only for the laptop-alex ?
