Network Printer won't print until Host Computer reboots
I have just installed Windows 7 32 bit on a computer with is hosting a HP Laserjet 1600 printer to which I would like to print to from my laptop running Windows 64 bit. I have added the network printer from the host machine but it won't print. Both systems File and Printer sharing is turned on in the advance sharing settings for both computers and I can share files OK. I have also allow Print permissions in the Security tab under the networked printer properties. However the spooled document print when I restart the Host computer??? Any help would be appreciated.

checking your power settings ... If you are running on desktop and that is where the printer is located. make sure your power settings say "High Performance"
That should stop the hard drive from shutting down... also go to device manager and right click to properties -->> Power Management >> uncheck "allow the computer to torn off this device to save power.. reboot the computer and see if that works for you |

Changed the power setting as you suggested and rebooted but the problem is still there. Any further ideas?

Hi squidsquid, can I ask how you have networked the printer? As in the steps you took to network it with the laptop. The system specs of both machine's may be of help too :)

I will do my best but please forgive my ignorance as I am in the shallow end of the tech pool.
Desktop is running Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium recently upgraded from XP Laptop is running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium Previously I had these computers networked when the desk top was running XP and working fine. Once I upgraded to Windows 7 I rejoined the Homegroup and added the networked printer through Add Printer via Devices and Printer just as I had previously but when I print the document it just sit in the document queue with its status as printing. But If I restart the Desktop, I think what ever is blocking the print command to the printer is disabled during the shutdown and this allows the print command to reach the printer before the Desk top powers off completely. I hope that make sense to you. |

Makes perfect sense, thank you.
Ok, well first thing's first, lets establish whether this is a network problem or a PC problem. What happens if you try to print from the Host machine? Also what is the make and model of the printer? |

So what was the answer? I have the exact same problem. The Homegroup seems to work perfectly. The host computer prints to a Lexmark X1185 via USB cable just fine. However, when I send a print job from the Homegroup wireless connected laptop, also using Win 7/64, the print job arrives at the host computer but will not trigger the printer into action. It is only when the host computer is rebooted that the print job runs. Yes I have installed the latest drivers.

Still haven't resolved the problem and I have to print documents from the host computer. Let me know if you find a solution.
