cmd prompt ipconfig, ping not working

    Hi Guys,

I'm currently having problems with cmd prompt.
    The issue happened like this.

Yesterday I was trying to create a shortcut to cmd prompt so after typing 'cmd' in the search bar after pressing start, I dragged the 'cmd.exe' that search found out onto the desktop.

I didn't use 'cmd.exe' on the desktop it straight away, as I was doing other stuff, but the computer was later restarted.

I tried using 'cmd.exe' from the desktop today but issuing 'ping' and 'ipconfig' did nothing. See below I've typed out what I see when I issue the commands, nothing happens, it just goes back to the prompt again. I also noticed that the start location is different from usual, it's "C:\Users\***>" as opposed to the default start directory.

    C:\Users\*****>ipconfig

    C:\Users\*****>ping 4.4.4.4

    C:\Users\*****>

I then checked C:\Windows\Systems32 and found that the cmd.exe had been actually pulled out and is the 'cmd.exe' on the desktop, I put it back in but now the two commands still doesn't work. ipconfig.exe and ping.exe are all in the folder.

I tried changing my environment variables but they've not helped. I'm not sure what could be the problem and if anyone can help it'd be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Does cmd still appear in the search box under the Start Orb?

yes it does, the cmd.exe I find from start will have a starting directory of 'c:\users\***>" while if I start the cmd prompt in the Systems32 folder the start directory would be "c:\windows\system32>"

However starting from both places results in the same thing when I issue ping or ipconfig.

Did you use this as the target in the properties tab of the shortcut?

    %windir%\system32\cmd.exe

Hi, I've just tried it, it didn't make any changes.

In trying to fix the problem, I've deleted the 'PATH' variable in environ vars. I don't think that was a good idea, so I've found some default values off the web and currently my PATH variable is set to

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live;C:\Perl64\site\bin;C:\Perl64\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem; %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Shared;C:\Program Files\CREDANT\Shield v6.8\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Thunder Network\KanKan\Codecs;C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\OpenCV2.2\bin;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\"

    Thanks for your help.

Bleh......how do you feel about going back to a previous restore point? I can't think of anything else...but perhaps others can.

Do a System Restore as Golden suggested and get things back to normal.

Then use this tutorial to make the shortcut.

Dumb question, did you set cmd to run as administrator - right click on cmd > shortcut tab > advanced > check the box "run as admin" > OK > Apply.
