Try using the BT Install CD.
Plug in one PC with a net cable, (Do not use wireless at the first stage)

May take 28 days for the phone to ready.

as theog says, it does take time to switch isp's.

have bt actually given your friend a 'going live' date?

even if that date is today (which happens to be a bank holiday), it can take until 9 in the evening until BT have done what they need to do at their end.

also have you entered the correct settings into the router? see here for instructions.

you need to supply at least a correct user name and password, that should have been sent in two separate letters (and emails) from bt.
