Sometimes the router is to far or someone doesn't want to run 200+ feet of ethernet cable to reach the desktop. Just because a desktop is going to be stationary doesn't make wireless on a desktop out of the question in certain circumstances. For example currently in my mom's house there are 4 wireless desktops just because of the size of the house and me being to lazy to run cable.
Yes, this goes for most desktop computers and any operating system. As to the original question, xp can not be connected wirelessly as Is, but needs card or adaptor to connect to my belkin router??
Alternatively we can over complicate the situation and you can create a wireless bridge with 2 access points and an unmanaged switch. You would connect access point A to your router and access point B to an unmanaged switch. This method really is just over kill and rarely used in a home environment(getting a wireless car is so much better).
