When you say VPS are you referring to a virtual private server?

So do you sit down at an actual computer or do you sit down at a terminal box? Because if you do not have administrative privileges over the server or network you will need to contact your IT staff.

If it was a VPS you would RDP onto the VPS, instead you are connecting to another network in a "dial in" fashion, this makes it a VPN. In regards to port forwarding unless you have very LAX admin good luck, I wont forward ports unless its for a 100% good reason and required.
