Change location for Selecting groups or users (Trying to share a HDD)

    Hi,

I'm trying to share my external Hard Drive over my home network and I have sharing enabled on this drive, then I tried to get the other computers on my network to connect to it, It says they don't not have permission to connect.

So then I tried to add permission in the Advanced Sharing settings, I tried to look for user accounts but it will only let me search for user accounts on this computer, can anyone help me to get it to search the network or show me another way of lettting EVERYONE on my network connect/ access all files, Its at home and I trust everyone on my network.

If you trust everyone in your homegroup, go to (just copy/paste this into your Windows explorer): Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

Very bottom of that, Turn Off Password Protected Sharing.

I've tried that, it still won't let me access the Hard Drive on any other computers.

    Hello,

Disable any Firewall or Security Software for now.

Is the ext drive a NAS similar to this one or it's connected to another computer thru a USB cable?

Create Identical UserName and Password to all computers that need to access the ext. HDD.

Can you access the shared ext HDD by doing this?
Click on Start and type \\ComputerName\Shared Drive or \\IPAddress\Shared Drive
Note that the computer name or IP Address is where the HDD is connected to.

Its not network attached, Its connected via USB cable to my main computer,
My problem is, is that, I don't know how to create a username and password for everyone :/

On other computers, they can open my computer and see the Backup Drive listed as being connected to another computer, but when I try access it, It says you do not have the correct permissions.

You'll have to do this on all the computers that will be accessing Files and Shared network resources.

So you want me to create a whole new user account so that everyone can access the hard drive?

I had my hard drive setup over the network on XP fine without any of this hassle, why can't I just allow people to get on it through my one main user account?

There's no need to create a new User Account. You may use the existing Account but make sure all the computers that need to access the shared drive or folder have the exact User Name and Password.

So I have to change the user accounts on other computers to the same name and password?
-I'm Sorry but that just sounds stupid and illogical, how can Microsoft not have a simpler way of doing this?

Hi - It's actually a common practice. I'm a System Admin, and the suggestion both works in Workgroup and Domain networks and it's not related to Microsoft.

You may try disabling the Guest account, it's not safe, but to test it out.
