Windows 7: How to share entire drives

15 Jun 2011   #21

Windows 10 Pro x64 x3, Ubuntu

In order to share a complete drive on Operating Systems after XP simply give the share a discriptive name - "data" is acceptable d, d: or d$ are system reserved names, and are not.

you obviously need to follow the rules for advanced sharing ....
  • Same user on all machines
  • share permissions set
  • file permissions set

Due to system / Trusted installer / admin restrictions you will find it difficult to share the system drive (c: ), although this is possible if you use the hidden administrator to add user file permissions to the complete drive.

Windows 7

In my two computer homegroup I tried giving L: the share name data.
Restarted both computers, still no access from the netbook to the pc's L drive.
Same name on both of course.
Only folder the netbook can access is Public.
Advanced settings are the same o both machines, Let Windows handle... etc. etc.
