Don't have internet access in my laptop...

<Don't have internet access in my laptop when I tried connecting to my cousin's DSL internet connection.>

    Hi guys!

My cousin has a desktop with a dsl internet connection while I don't so one time I tried inserting the internet cable in my laptop's port hoping that I would be able to connect to the web and get some updates on my anti-virus program. But to my dismay, I was not able to secure a connection thus failed to update.

I talked to a friend of mine regarding this problem and he told me that it has something to do with REFERENCE Number. He did not explain it to me so I'm hoping that you could help me with this.

What should I do to have internet connection using my cousin's DSL?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to Seven Forums,

    Start off with Power cycle:
Turn off your computer and unplug the modem. Turning your modem off may not be enough to get it to restart itself, so always unplug its power source. Leave your modem off for 1 minute, then plug it back in and turn on your computer.

Do an ipconfig /all from your computer, compare the output of yours and your cousin's.
Click on Start => in search box type cmd press enter. From the black screen, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen or Command prompt then choose Select All and Paste the results onto your Post.

You may also try these commands from your computer. Click on Start, type cmd, from the command prompt type:
    ipconfig /release then press enter
    ipconfig /renew then press enter

    Hi TheSeeker welcome to SevenForums.

Did you install the modem driver for your cousins device? If not, and he no longer has the disk/install utility, what is the make and model? we may be able to find the driver for you.

    Thanks guys!

Sorry for this late reply. I have been busy these past days and have just checked your replies.

2xg thanks. I still have to try that one of this days. Haven't been to my cousin's house lately. I'll just post the result.

severedsolo, thanks also. i'm using a laptop and it was I who installed all the drivers for it. I believe I have installed it correctly. It's just that I was thinking that maybe I can use my cousin's DSL (unplug it from her pc and plug it into my laptop's port) though everytime I try it, I just can't get an internet connection. Do I still need to reinstall the driver of the built-in modem in my laptop?

    Again, thanks guys!
