Phantom Homegroup user
Nice Juicy issue for everyone here:
I will list the issue and the steps that I have currently performed so far.
So here's the issue:
Rebuild my HP DM1Z laptop using a slipstreamed version of Windows 7 (as per instructions from our omnipotent moderator - Brink : link;
Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 into a Installation DVD or ISO File )
I chose not to setup a default account and let it use the default, built-in administrator account for the install. So install additional drivers etc for my account and customise to the way i would like specifically for my ultra-portable netbook.
SO with the built in administrator account I connect to my homegroup (already setup on my PC) which is fine...
I then (a few weeks later) decide that I prefer my name to come up for my login as opposed to administrator
so I create a local admin account named "Alex".
Now I have 2 accounts - i only want one. I disable the administrator account by right clicking computer, selecting management and then going to local user accounts and groups. Selecting to disable the built in administrator account and then logging off and then back in to confirm. This works, the problem is that when I am now logged in under the Alex account, I see that there is a homegroup user: administrator on alex-laptop that should not be there, so I attempt to delete the account, this fails because it is a built in account I presume, a template. So I attempt to delete all the appdata associated with that account, so to do this I edit the advanced permissions and give alex access to this and then try to rename the account. Says there are files open. Cant rename, I think of it as a template again. delete the registry settings associated with this account under computer\hkey_local_machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and the selected profile associated with the administrator profile.
This does not work
I realise that because it is appearing in the homegroup, it may simply be the homegroup service. > services.msc stop the service, try to rename, doesnt work. I believe this now to be a built in related thing.... unless I have missed something to rename/delete this account, this would be all that I would normally need to do to rename a domain profile account. Anyway, I would prefer not to use unlocker... so, really all I am trying to do is remove this pesky "ghost" administrator from my home group, as I really dont like sharing files/ having a backdoor into files/disabled accounts on my home network.. any ideas guys? - location for homegroup reg settings perhaps, or an idea on where I should further be disabling/deleting the builtin admin profile?
