Access type: No Internet Access - intermittent

I must say I find win 7 much more obscure in its new UI as to what it is doing than XP (or Linux). My problem is that the wireless connection icon on the status bar keep getting a yellow warning triangle - no internet access - and the same happens in the perplexing network and sharing center display. This is intermittent and driving me nuts.

The problem in on a new Acer Aspire 5250. It connects happily to my Draytek DSL/wireless router, but says there is no connection to the network. I have a Dell laptop running XP and this connects and perfectly - but the Acer keeps going up and down.

When down I can't ping anything, when up it is pinging. So what is this darn "Internet Access" thing in the Network and Sharing screen - what does it mean? It shows good connection to the wireless router, but not good connection to the internet.

FYI.... I have automatic DHCP and automatic DNS selected in the IPv4 configurations. The fact that the Dell unit runs perfectly says to me that the router is setup correctly (as it has been for years) - but there must be something odd in the Acer's configuration.

Oh, and if I make a wired connection to the Draytek router (same auto for DHCP and DNS) then this works solidly.

Hi, Check your firewall and see if its set on, if it is pop it off, and try connecting again.

If this dosent work, then post a screenie.

The firewall is already disabled.

Thanks for your interest. I do appreciate it. Unfortunately I am about to depart for the airport and will be out of town for just over a week. So I can't continue to try and debug this currently.

I have several devices connected to the wireless including my Blackberry and an Aluratek internet radio. All other devices connect fine. My wireless router supports b+g+n and the new Accer also supports n. But when I started trying to debug this, I turned off the n, since it was new to me, so the wireless is only b+g. So everything connects with g. I am using in WPA/PSK for everything.

I did uninstall all the Acer bloatware immediately. I am using Trend Micro for anti-virus, (as I do on other machines) and as I said I have turned the windows firewall off. The Draytek Vigor wireless/router/DSL modem has a firewall in it, and I have firewall turned off for all devices behind this firewall.

The new windows 7 has the irritating habit of having security different depending whether it is home/work/public network. Because I just cant get the wireless to work dependably, I have made the settings open for all these categories.

I just don't understand why it works sometimes and then stops saying "No Internet Access" when the wireless link is good. I have wondered about it being a DNS problem.
But when there is "No Internet Access" I can't successfully ping the router (192.168.1.1) so if it cant do that there is no point wondering about DNS. Something somewhere in windows is turning off. If I knew what it was I could turn it on. Very frustrating. I'll take this up when I get back from my trip.

Yes, it was the antivirus software. I removed the Trend software and everything started to work fine. Pretty obvious once the answer was known, but frustrating until I realized this. I have used Trend for a number of years on various machines and had no problems. But this time it bit me. I have downloaded the free Microsoft Security Essentials, and all is still good.
