I had a brief look at the other thread.

Windows 7 will automatically try to connect to other W7 PCs that are using "Home network".
I'd change the network type to "Work network" or "Public network" (I never use "Home").

IIRC, the "Remote" functions are ticked by default.
I usually disable various services, when I have installed the OS (and those remote services are included).

Make sure that you create a HDD image and/or a "System Restore Point", BEFORE changing services.

Thank you Lehnerus, it was set up as a home network so that could have been the problem, it is set to public now so i am not sharing anything with anyone.... fingers crossed lol

cant disable the locator or the mapper on the remote functions these are greyed out and are always automatic and started but everything else i have disabled regarding remote connections also and disabled the wireless network until i need it on the super hub from virgin media

You can block specific services including Remote Desktop through Windows' built-in firewall. It's just a matter of unchecking them for both home and work/public network profiles.

Type "Services" in the "Start Menu Search" box.

Neighbours can see pc and internet contents with network discovery off-search.png

Locate the required item in the list.
Right click on it and select "Properties".
You should be able to change it from "Automatic" to "Manual" or "Disabled" (I'd try "Manual" first).
You should also be able to stop it from running.

i think the only thing i am allowing through windows firewall is battlefield 3 and punkbuster A & B everything else i have disabled, is it safe to leave core networking as an allowance through windows firewall?

Thank you again, just want to do my best to setup a pc that doesnt need to share files with anyone, is securely connected to my network, i tried the shields up website to make sure the firewall is working and everything except icm ping passed but i think i need the ping for gaming.
I thought i might of had to connect to virgin media internet like this Set up a broadband (DSL or cable) connection, but virgin say no account username or passwords are required to securely connect to the internet and when i plug the LAN in it automaticly connects up no need to run the network wizard

no one can access your computer if they are not on your network...meaning if you are not using a wireless router, they are not seeing your computer period if you at least have a firewall. software firewalls are not really even needed anymore. because every modem that has been on the market for many many years now have built in firewalls.
linux (is very very secure compared to windows) and it doesn't even come with a firewall.

if you are on a wireless router, SET UP A THE DAMN SECURITY SETTINGS ALREADY. you're going about the whole thing totally wrong. it's not a windows issue. without any kind of security settings (wep, wpa, wpa2, etc etc.)
you're letting anyone with a wireless adapter use your internet and browse your computer.
set up a wpa-2 passkey in your router asap. or just keep letting everyone with computer have at your internet and computer....

Also the OP has Win7 home, which doesn't support Remote desktop connections to it. Only has remote connections out. Unless there's 3rd party software.

    I'm not sure about that

    Its firewall is called iptables.
If you install the GUI tool, there is an entry called "Firewall" in the System > Administration menu.

Here's what the default configuration looks like in CentOS 6:

ok I was told by the good folks on the ubuntu forums there wasn't a firewall at all
    https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/keepin.../firewall.html

but regardless of that, chances are 100% of all modern routers and modems has a built in firewall.
