Promised earlier here I try to install an old XP I had to an extra rig and try to learn this thing. It seems my XP-CD is so scratched it won't work anymore and I'm not willing to spend any money to buy it (for principal reasons I don't want to get a pirated copy).
For me this is end of the story, can not help.

If you have a valid licence key I wouldn't call it piracy. Since bp96 can see the Windows XP PC from Windows 7 it shows Netbios is working.

It's more likely port 445 is blocked on the Windows XP side or a problem with Winsock2.
NetBIOS provides three distinct services:
- Name service for name registration and resolution (port: 137)
- Datagram distribution service for connectionless communication (port: 138)
- Session service for connection-oriented communication (port: 139)
I've been sharing these two Op system for months with zero problems. You just need to run the XP network wizard and tell it to allow sharing as it sets up. Of course you need enable all the Win 7 settings for sharing also. This works for me every single time without fail.
I am getting a master browser error between my win7 box and the XP box on my network, but I am not sharing anything. Specifically the error states "The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced" (that's the last part of the error message).
Since I am not sharing anything, not sure why I am getting this error -
anyone have any advice?

I had this problem where I could share files from Windows XP to Windows 7 but could not do the same from Windows 7 to XP.
I followed this link and amended the registry (on the XP machine) and all works really good. No issues no more.

Pingboy ...
Thanks for reporting that fix for this problem Pingboy. Very useful information. There are a few other registry adjustments which fix sharing problems in different circumstances where sharing isn't working correctly. I'll add this one to my list. :)
