Internet Connection Sharing between 7 and XP

Hi guys, first time user,
Everything up to this point with windows 7 has been a breeze - am really enjoying it - but now i've lost 4+ hours trying to get this to work and it doesnt.

I have 2 systems one with windows 7 and an older one with XP. The Windows 7 machine connects to the internet through a network adapter and gets its IP adress automatically and works perfectly both in xp and in 7.

The Windows 7 machine is connected to the XP Machine via a second adapter (pci) and a crosslinked cable.

Before Windows 7 IN WINDOWS XP the 7 machine used an ip like 192.168.0.1 and ICS to give internet to the second machine (which got its ip automatically)

I tried a lot of things (ex. static fixed ips enable the computers to share files but not the internet connection) but i still keeps saying its an Unidentified Network / Public Network for the second connection (between the computers)

any ideeas / tips to get ICS to work properly

Note:
- ICS is enabled for the internet connection.
- Back when both computers had XP the second XP computer obtained its IP Adress automatically and the internet was shared .. with 7 on the second (xp) computer doesnt aquire the right adress ever.

Any tips are welcome

Sorry if i wasnt clear enough - i have done this - i've set the Public network profile to the same settings as the Private one but still the computer with Windows XP does not obtain its ip adress autmatically.

(like i said before i can set them manually and file sharing starts to work but not internet connection sharing - firewalls are off btw)

i solved it with the help of ghost301 - now both computers have internet and can share files - in spite of the Unidentified Network / Public network lock on things

Here's a checklist of things for ICS and file sharing for 2 croslinked computers (in my case a Win7 and XP one):

- both computers set to the same workgroup
- restarts
- advanced sharing settings - all things turned on (network discovery etc.) except for password protected sharing
- bridged the connection with the internet
- turned on Internet Connection Sharing for the internet connection - this forced an ip to the other connection (192.168.137.1) and gave an option to select which connection should have access to the ICS (the second connection or the bridge - you choose the second / crosslinked cable connection)
- shared some folders on both computers
- worked instantly (the other pc aquired a correct ip and internet)

dunno if this was the right way to do things but it works for me

hey guys first time user here. i have the same problem with win 7-xp ics. My win 7 machine is the host computer and xp machine is the client and so far i have been able to make it work for breef intervals of time. internet access simply cuts off on xp machine after a while or restart. i have spent a few nights trying to figure this out. uder xp or vista it works fine. both machines can ping both by ip and name and are able to share files between them i'll also post the ipconfig for refference....thnx in advance

Greetings there ^^ Im sorry to have revived a old thread,tho i am trying to do something without any success.

Id like to use a ICS Between my Desktop computer with Windows 7 Ultimate X64 and my parent's laptop with Windows XP Home Edition X86 . The Host has the internet via USB HSDPA Modem,and im trying to share the internet connection via WLAN Network.

First of all,my wife can connect easily to it,tho she has Windows 7 X86 ,it gets the correct ip adresses and gets internet in less than 25 seconds.Same happens to my 2nd Laptop,which can connect very well,haveing Windows 7.

But my parents's laptop with Windows XP wont do it.

Things i've done : Setted ICS On the Desktop computer
All computers are same Workgroup
File sharing is activated,same is Network discovery etc etc
The host,my wife's laptop and my 2nd laptop are in the Homegroup (as W7 calls it)
Tho my parents's laptop cant go in(Since its WXP)

Ive tried configuring the laptop with the wizard "This computer connects to the internet through another computer in my network" .

It connects to the wireless networks,gets a IP adress ,i recieve and send packets (At least thats what it says) but it doesnt haveinternet nor can share stuff between them.

Oh btw,the IP adress it recieves is totally diferent (in range) from the desktop and the other 2 laptops.

(All 3 computers have 192.168.137.XXX and 255.255.255.0 as Gate,but the windows XP one has 169.254.154.243 and 255.255.0.0.

P.S: If i manually set IP Directions to be in the range (192.168.137.XXX and 255.255.255.0) i can share files easily but the internet doesnt share >< .

Solved,just had to add 1st DNS : host computer ip and 2nd DNS from my ISP,
