ok well, i have a "buffalo router" and it says on the front box Enhanced multiple Security management (AES,TKIP,WEP), and no i dont have another laptop connected to the network, i do have about 3 ipod touches hooked up the the network, and all seem to be running alright, although the connection was alot quicker on the ipods (loading videos etc.) before i started having these problems with my connection on this computer, im starting to think it is a problem with the router :/

The other factor could be inteferences causing dropouts. But yeh if you can't figure it out i'd say time for new hardware.

I fancy onboard/built-in definately. Where possible i always avoid using third party software too, just to eliminate any possibilities of conflicts. If you have money invest in a laptop for wireless connection and have your Pc as wired. G' luck with it :)
