FTP Won't connect on my PC/Network

    Hi Guys

I run across this error last night when trying to upload vBulletin software to a new site being hosted on Rackspace Cloud Server. I managed to install Plesk 9.5.4 safe and sound, added the user and domain name. When I enter the details into Filezilla at home it just hangs and times out. I got in to work this morning and tried the same thing on a work machine and sailed in fine. I tried also on Net2FTP site and all works well (in work).

So I get home tonight and do the basics (restart machine - etc) I tried one last time and the same error occurs at home, even when I try on the Net2FTP site it won't access it? the settings on Filezilla/Net2FTP are identical from work to here, so can only imagine it to be something on my machine? either a port or firewall blocking access?

Not sure if any of you guys have come across something like this or would be able to offer any help - it would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
    Shaun

PS. Also when trying to access the IP admin for the site i get this in Google Chrome - not sure if they are related? Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Click start and then run. Type in 'cmd' and then enter. When the black box open's type in 'tracert' followeded by a space and then the name of the FTP site.

Also, try and telnet the site on port 21 (FTP Port) to see if it time out. In Windows 7 you have to install the Telnet client. See: Telnet for Windows Vista & Windows 7 | Leateds.com

Are there any rule in place on your router to stop FTP? Can you FTP other sites?

Hi I did the tracert - here is the result:

I am not aware of any rules on the router, as I can access other sites via FTP.

Sorry to be a pain but never used Telnet so have no idea about that

Thanks for the help so far :)

Its ok, to install the telnet client on Windows 7 do the following:

    1. Open control panel.
    2. Then go into programs.
    3. Then in programs and features there should be a part that says ‘turn windows features on or off ‘ .
    4. Click ‘turn windows features on or off ‘ then on the list that appears simply check the box beside: Telnet Client.
    5. Then click ok.

When this is done, click start and then run. Enter 'cmd' and type in: 'Telnet "FTP SERVER" 21'. Replace FTP SERVER with your FTP Server address.

Let us know what happens :).

It just seems to error when it finishes updating... 'An error has occurred, not all of the features were successfully changed'...

I just find it strange how it is just that site? could it be my ISP blocking RackSpace or something like that?

I dont think so. The Tracert shows that you can communicate to the rackspace servers.

Can you FTP any other sites? Disable your Anti-Virus and try again to see if that is blocking it.

Have you checked your usename and password in filezilla?

I have created 3/4 different profiles in filezilla and used the correct password / username and still nothing

I think it may be something router related as for some reason this morning i am unable to connect to its wifi, so I will be calling BT I will bring this issue up with them and see if it was anything to do with firmware / updates?

PS> I tried disabling AVG and had the same outcome...

BT have no idea what I am on about and will call me back tonight. I am speaking with RackSpace now, so hopefully they can find the problem. I tried SmartFTP to see was it a configuration problem on Filezilla but nothing doing on that either.

Glad to hear that you got it resolved. We should have thought about the firewall earlier!
