File sharing works from PC-A to PC-B, but not vice-versa.

For the record, I've spent a few hours combing for a solution before posting.

I have 2 devices, both fresh loads of Win7-64, all updates current, etc, etc. No extra software installed at this time. Username/password identical on both machines.

    On PC-A:
I go into 'Computer' select PC-B, and it connects, showing the shared drives with no issue.

    On PC-B:
I go into 'Computer' select PC-A, and I'm prompted with an 'Enter Network Password' screen. I enter the username/password (again, identical on both devices) and it loops back and prompts me again. No matter what I try on this device, I can not connect to the PC-A. I've tried using HomeGroups, same thing, password loop.

I have tried re-loading PC-A, thinking there may have been something corrupted on the install. This had no effect. My next "last-ditch" effort is to re-load PC-B. I'm posting this first in the event that someone has had this issue.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't believe that you can connect two machines together with the same username/password combination--hence the loop--try changing the username or password on one of the machines

That's never been a problem in the past. For all of my devices, I've always used the same username/password combo. However, to test your theory, I created a separate account/pw on PC-A and attempted to use those credentials to connect, no go.

I'm thinking the problem is either with PC-A or somewhere in my network wiring. Several other devices in my network are unable to connect to the shares on this device, yet it's able to attach to all of them. I'm marking the thread solved simply because I do not believe anyone can help with this.

both computers are on the same network ? (I know this sounds obvious, but I've seen a lot of new modems with built in wireless and people are using the wireless of the modem, but still have a wire to a router that they are wiring the rest of their computers up with).

What permissions does PC-A have on your shared folders?

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, both devices on the same network. I've got cat5e ran throughout the house, all connect into my u-verse modem/router. As for permissions, I've gone as far as to set everything wide-open to no avail. Here shortly, I'm going to move the device to a different data jack. I'm wondering if I've got a bad connection on one of my ports. This is crazy. I've never seen anything like it!

Update: I tried manually connecting via IP address rather than workstation name and voila, it connects. Something funky going on with name resolution apparently.

Yeah, that is somewhat crazy, and I assume pinging pc-a results in the ip address you are using?

Hmm, you're onto something, when I ping PC-A, it resolves to 127.0.0.1. If I ping the IP with the -a switch...

    ping -a 192.168.1.68

...it resolves to the correct name.

At this point, I've statically assigned the IP to the offending device and I'm up and running, so to speak. I've found several posts about similar issues, but none of their resolutions worked for me. Fortunately, it's just my home network with a few devices, so my band-aid solution will work for now!

Hmm, yeah, the only reason I'd think that it would resolve to 127.0.0.1 is if the computers had the same name, or the hosts file had that computer name pointing to 127.0.0.1... either way, if the band aid solution works, no point in spending too much other time fighting it.
