Most connection-based programs disconnect when minimized

I have three computers, one desktop (what my listed specs are for), a laptop, and a netbook. Each are running some version of Windows 7 (Ultimate x64, Home x64, Home x86). On each computer, if I minimize a connected AIM, Yahoo, or MSN account.. Also any Telnet connected windows/Telnet based platforms that are currently connected to a server.. After a good 2-4 minutes of being minimized, all programs are disconnected. At first I thought it was an internet problem, but that isn't the case (program(s) run fine without any hiccups as long as its an active window). Search engines also reveal it happening for Remote Desktop users and applications (though I have no experience with RD). I have to conclude it's a Windows 7 problem, but can it be remedied? I want to say Im averagely experienced in modifying windows settings and I cannot find anything that this problem relates to. If any additional info is required, I will happily comply.

    Hello,

Is this causing a problem or are you asking out of interest?

If the browser etc is minimised and there is nothing to load then there is nothing to download so they will disconnect.

Its not a problem its just something that is done to save bandwidth I think. Some webpages do however refresh every couple of minutes if it has active information (for example bbc.co.uk probably does this).

    It's causing a problem.

And none of the programs I mentioned are browsers (that I'm aware of o_O). Programs like AIM are instant messaging programs, programs like GMud are telnet based applications, and Microsoft's regular telnet app that you open by giving a host name and port behind the telnet:// protocol.. All disconnect in Windows 7 when minimized for 2-4 minutes compared to Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 98, that do not cause the programs to disconnect. (I've tried this on several different computers now. Apps in even newly installed Windows 7 disconnect, apps in other windows OS do not.)

Though I STILL haven't tried on someone else's ISP. I'm still having doubts thats the problem considering everything is fine on other Window's OS.

If it's the OS trying to save bandwidth, is there a way to change the setting? Maybe not turn it off (unless that's necessary) but maybe change to disconnect after a longer period of time?
