Using Remote Desktop Connection with dynamic dns

Since I'm going to be away from home I want to be able to access my home network using Remote Desktop Connection. This works fine as long as I know my home IP address, but this is subject to change without notice, so I acquired a domain name and signed up for a dynamic dns service. Now, I can ping my new domain name by going to a command prompt and entering: ping mydomainname.com.mydynamicdns.com and I get a postive response so I take it the dynamic dns is working. However, if I now try to log on to Remote Desktop using the computer name (mydomainname.com.mydynamicdns.comort), it does not make a connection. I know I can get online and just look up my home ip address whenever I want, but since I went to the trouble, I was hoping to be able to just use the domain name.

    Thanks for you help.

I'm not sure but you probably need to change the Dynamic DNS entry in your router. see attached .docx

    Hello,

Have you installed a DDNS Client on your PC or have you configured your router to update it?

Also, confirm that you can access remote desktop via the IP address and check the RDP ports on your router.

First I tried this ddns service: FreeDNS - Free DNS - Dynamic DNS - Static DNS subdomain and domain hosting and I installed their freedns client on one of my computers, but their website and instructions are so bad I could figure any of it out, so I've now signed on with dnydynamic.org and thier's is all web based, so I can just log on and see what the current ip is that is associated with my domain name.

My lack of understanding of all this should be fairly obvious by now, but I think I have what I need at this point.

edit: I am able to access my LAN computers from outside the LAN, but only if I use the ip address. I am not able to connect if I try to use my newly acquired domain name instead.

Does the domain name resolve to the correct IP address if you ping it?

If I ping my domain name by itself I get no response. To get a response, I must ping

    mydomain.com.dnscynamic.com.

When I do, it reponds correctly. I'm wondering if my new domain name has not made it into my dns server yet, or does the domain name get superceded when you sign up for a dynamic dns service?

    Hello,

You wont be able to access it through your domain name. You will only be able to do it when putting mydomain.com.dnscynamic.com because its only a sub domain of theres which they have pointed at your IP Address.

If you do own a domain name, you can create an A-Record within DNS to point to mydomain.com.dnscynamic.com.
