I would like to authenticate to a domain server without actually joining the domain. The reason is that I would like to use the central password database, but I still want to run my own machine and not be limited by all kinds of policies.
Is this possible? If so, any idea how?

Welcome to the Windows 7 forums.
If your trying to map a drive to a share on the server, most will let you do that by using the map option. and selecting use other userid putting your userid and password in the correct place.. If you have a userid on the server, there should be no problem.
If what you want to do is to use the Active Directory on the server, your kind of out of luck unless your an administrator on the server.

Thanks for the reply. It's not about mapping drives or accessing shares, it's really about authentication. To prevent people from having to keep passwords in sync, I'd like to authenticate a user to the active directory when they login on a non-domain Windows system.
The reason I thought this should technically be possible (at least on the server/domain side) is that I also run some Linux systems, on which I seem to be able to get Kerberos tickets and use that for authentication. As I'm not an administrator on the domain, I have not added the Linux system to the domain, but the authentication works anyway.
Is there any other way to do what I want to do?
Hint, search on LDAP and see if this might be the area that you can proceed with.

I don't think using LDAP will solve my problem. But, very atypical for me, I decided to not be stubborn and to search for it anyway, and I stumbled upon pGina. It is a authentication system with plugins, one of which is for LDAP. That one allowed me to find it, but then it turns out that there is also a plugin for Kerberos.
I haven't tested anything yet, but it seems like it might be a solution. I'll try to find some time to experiment. Thanks for the help!
