Windows 7: "Access Is Denied" When trying to add wireless network

Hi,
I got the same problem, it seems to be caused by removing some windows seven component.

If you used a "vlite" version of windows seven, try with a "full" version untweaked.

Also in control panel there is an option "uninstall programs", go there and click on the "turn windows features on or off" and make sure internet related options are installed, it should fix the problem.

About my problem, i installed a vlited tweaked version of windows seven and i uninstalled almost all windows features in order to make it run fine on my eee pc (asus 901), i fixed the problem by re-installing all windows features so i cant tell you which one fixed the problem (not enough time to test all features) and after a few days i just re-vlited my OS and now it works fine after a clean install.

Good luck, and if you found which feature fixes the wireless network management, post it there, in order to help other people.

ps: after a clean install and when everything is working fine, you should make a full backup with acronis or something like that, it can make your life really easier if you got a problem after playing with things we shouldn't play with

I managed to solve this problem, and guess what the problem was....

Just as I had expected, it was a permissions problem.

Apparently, In Windows 7 network profiles are saved in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces

The permissions for the wlansvc folder (as well as most of the rest of my programdata folder) were messed up and basically nobody had access to them. I added my user, administrators group, the administrator user, system, local service and applied to all subfolders etc and now I can save network profiles.

@ ClericX:

I have been watching this thread and waiting for an answer to this problem as I was having the EXACT SAME ISSUE with my installation of Win7.

I am happy to report that while your fix didn't *quite* work for me, it got me on the right path.

I started navigating to the location you wrote out (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces) but immediately noticed that when I got to Wlansvc, there was no "Profiles" folder, but instead a "migration data" folder. I opened it and the Profiles and Interfaces folders were inside of it. I copied and pasted the Profiles folder to Wlansvc, exited all of the folders, typed in the WEP key for my home network (yeah I know WEP is lame haha), restarted the computer, and it saved the network!

Without your post I would probably just have typed in my WEP key a billion times.

Thanks!

having had this issue for i don't know how many months (the week 7068 was leaked .. oy.) i asked both on here and on the evga forums, no one could tell me anything. just migrated to rtm via company VLK and lemme tell ya, once this issue popped back up i was quite annoyed. took me around 10 different search strings to find this post. fixed it in one quick skim of the post content.

much <3, and a bit of rep.

Well I have given permissions for everybody and their dog, I see profiles are in the Wlansvc folder and I still cannot connect to the internet without typing in my key. I have no preferred networks. I have no networks listed in my "manage networks" list and when I try to manually add a network, I get access denied. I also use WEP.

Any other suggestions?

add; system, local service, your username, administrator, administrators
to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles s' security tab user access listing, and then proceed to take ownership of that folder (via the right click take ownership context menu reg edit tweak you can find floating around on the internet.)

this is what fixed my problem, still hasn't glitched out on me.

and don't forget to check full access in the bottom list of allow/deny/etc ;o

Thanks, kenabi. This is getting infuriating. I have the right click "take ownership" tweak and have used it. Perhaps my lack of understanding of "permissions" is what's getting in my way. The security tab says: Administrators,my username, SYSTEM, Administrator and LOCAL SERVICE all have Full Control.
I see Special Permissions are granted for nobody.
Administrators permissions are listed as "not inherited" but all the others are inherited from C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Wlansvc

This is making me nuts. Is there something more I can do or have done wrong?

Hi I am having the same problem too. Exact same problem. My laptop with win xp works, and now my pc with windows 7 works but still wont detect the actual modem (netgear) only the dlink router. I dont know whats going on. I have tried to install the modem via the modem CD but it fails. Any idea why this is happening? I had installed win 7 over win xp.
