    I'm not questioning the information you are providing.
    This is just not something I've personally run into before.
    As you said in your initial post I don't believe it to be causing any harm, though it would be nice to explain it.

    No, the icon is always up, even when I have connection.
    How would I go about back-dating my wireless driver?

    well you apparently have an Atheros AR9285 wireless device.
    At least that is what shows in your device manager.
    ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)

    it's an 'unofficial' site but I actually used it in the past and it seems legit.

    Back-dating my driver didn't work, and neither did re-updating it.

    Edit: On a different network issue, is there any way to improve network utilization? We apparently have a 54 mb/s connection, however the maximum that's ever used is about 2% of that on any of the devices linked to our modem, even the computer with the wire connection.
