Cannot connect to a shared network drive 0x80004005

On our network, I cannot access a shared folder on my friends machine but he can access a shared folder mine. I do not even get as far as a challenge for credentials. We are both using windows 7 and are in the same workgroup. We are also on the same subnet. In addition. I can ping his machine. I can also Remote Desktop Connect. When I try to connect to \\hismachinename all windows tells me is Error code: 0x80004005. I can nbtstat ok into his machine. Problem also happens when my firewall is turned off. I have ensured I have windows 7 updates. I run security essentials and a registry cleaner to ensure my laptop is clean. Problem happens if I use a wireless network or ethernet.

In addition, I can't connet to other machines on the network. It is as if the router is saying, don't let him because nothing on my machine seems any different to my friends.

The problem happens as soon as I type in the machine name in windows explorer. I do not get to the stage where I am prompted for username and password.

    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Seven Forums breako,

Instead of typing \\hismachinename, type his computer's IP Address followed by the shared folder or Driver for example \\192.168.1.5\SharedFolder.

To obtain the IP Address of his computer, you may run the ipconfig /all command from his computer by following my Tutorial. If it's a little hassle for you doing this in his computer, you may download, install and run AdvancedIPScanner from your computer, to get his IP Address as well as the Host Name.

Can you ping the IP of the computer?

Any Security or Firewall Software installed in his and yours?

Also, can we compare yours and his ipconfig /all, post and attach a .txt file.
How to run an ipconfig /all?

    1. Yes can ping his machine.
    2. Typing \\his.ip.address makes no difference. Same error.

    His ipconfig /all

Just to clarify, were you trying to access your friend's computer thru his WLAN connection? Have you tried accessing his files thru his LAN (wired connection) \\HisLANIP\Shared Folder. Please let me know the outcome.

Also, let's update his Atheros driver by downloading it from the manufacturer's site.
ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)
Follow this Tutorial on how to manually update the atheros driver.

2xg...I was curious about your post here. I have a similiar problem, but, I am able to access other machines (Win7 and XP) on my home network by using the IP address. Why can I not use the machine name as in \\mymachine ?

2xg....and one more question...after entering the IP addresses ( \\ip-address ), the IP address AND the named computer show up in my Network. See attached screenshot. Curious to know why that is.

And...will it stick after I reboot this machine?

    Thanks!
