Problem creating network printer on Win7 shared from WinXP
I have a home network consisting of a company-issued WinXP Pro desktop (HP) and a personal Win7 Home Premium laptop (HP). The WinXP machine has a HP printer (hp PSC 2210) connected via USB. This printer is "shared" by the WinXP machine (shared as "hppsc220"). *Unfortunately*, the WinXP machine uses a work-related domain name, and can't be changed. It's not on a "WORKGROUP".
Both machines are on the same LAN, but aren't in the same workgroup/homegroup or domain.
WinXP box is on 192.168.1.100
Win7 box has ip 192.168.1.6
I want to create a network printer on my new Win7 box for this printer. If I use "Add a Printer | Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth Printer", the Win7 box does not "see" this printer, even though it's shared. I assume because of the domain/group differences?
So, I try "My printer wasn't listed...", and I try to use the "Select a shared printer by name". When I try to specify the name
\\192.168.1.100\hppsc220
I get a Error "Windows failed to connect to the printer" (operation failed with error 0x0000051f).
Can anyone suggest a remedy?
