Can i have some advice setting up RDC?

    Hi everyone

Just wondering if someone wouldn't mind lending me some advice. I have a windows 7 have desktop machine and a windows vista home laptop machine, i wanted to have a play around with RDC as i have never used it before. The problem is i just cant get the machines to connect to each other. I have just read that RDC is not available on "Home Premium" versions of windows is this correct? I have RDC loaded up so that kind of threw me abit as it is on the machine.

Anyway if the above is not true, i have tried pinging my laptop from my dekstop via IP and node name and it see's it fine. I have checked RDC is enabled on both machines which it is and i have also check the registry to make sure its showing the correct port which it is.

Am i missing a very easy step here?

    Hope you can help

    Thanks a mill

Liam, you are correct in that the home versions are not able to act as a rdc server. I..e.. you can not connect to them but you can use them as a client to connect to other computers running the pro versions and above or a server.

Of course you have to authorize a user to access via rdp on the machine that you wish to connect to.

Cheers for clearing that up mate. The reason i was looking at trying RDC was i am trying to get my head around VPN's and i was going to try and setup my billion 7800n router to allow me to access my files from anywhere from any machine. I then thought i could perhaps use RDC to then remote to any of the machines on the network if i needed to. I have used apps like logmein, teamviewer etc but cant help but think these 3rd parties are 100% secure and i wanted to try out VPN as well but its killing my brain lol

    Thanks again
